Cookies and Tracking

This page names what is stored on your device and who stores it. Our analytics set two cookies. Ezoic, our advertising partner, and the partners it works with set their own, and where the law requires it they ask first. We set no advertising cookies of our own.

Whose cookies these are

We set no advertising cookies and no cross-site tracking cookies of our own. Two cookies here belong to Google Analytics and are described in the next section, one small cookie of our own remembers your language, described further down, and the advertising cookies belong to Ezoic and its partners, described under Advertising. Everything else we keep stays in your browser.

Analytics, and the two cookies they set

We use Umami to see roughly how many people visit and which pages they reach. It uses no cookies and collects no personal data, only anonymous, aggregate figures. Alongside it we now run Google Analytics, which an advertising partner asked for before they will consider the site. It sets two cookies here, _ga and _ga_9DEYJ4XZZ4. Together they tell a returning visitor from a new one, so one person is not counted as several. They last up to two years, only this site can read them, and the advertising features are switched off, so they are not used to build a profile of you or to follow you to other sites. Both tools are loaded from our own address. Where Google Analytics sends what it measures is decided by Google, though: from Europe it goes straight to a European Google address, and from elsewhere it comes back through ours. More detail is in our Privacy Policy.

Where the law asks us to ask, in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Ezoic’s consent notice appears on your first visit and nothing is written until you choose. That one answer decides the advertising cookies and the two above. If you decline, the two cookies are never set and the visit is counted without them. To change your answer, use the privacy settings button the notice leaves at the edge of the page, or clear this site’s data in your browser.

What we store in your browser, and why

So the puzzle is there when you come back, we keep a little information in your browser's own storage. The small things sit in local storage, your lamp and your sound level among them, and a picture you upload sits in IndexedDB, your browser's store for larger files. This is functional, not tracking, and it never leaves your device:

• the puzzle you are building on your own, a jigsaw or a game of Jigsaw Solitaire, so you can step away and resume it,
• the picture you chose for a table, and the file itself if you uploaded one,
• a small token for each shared table, plus a random id for this browser and the display name you last typed, so you can take your seat again after a refresh.

There is one cookie of our own, and it is not for tracking. The first time you arrive we look at your browser language, and we remember the language you ended up on in a cookie called cbp_lang, so the site does not have to work it out again on every visit. Picking a language yourself writes the same cookie. It lasts a year, it holds nothing but a language code, and it is never read by anyone else.

A shared table is the one thing that is not kept here. It lives on the server that keeps the two of you in sync, so either of you can close the tab and come back to the same pieces, and it is deleted two days after the last piece moves. The token in your browser is the key to your seat, not a copy of the puzzle.

Advertising

Advertising comes from Ezoic. Its scripts load on every page, but no ad is shown on the board while you play. To show and measure ads, Ezoic and the advertising partners it works with set cookies and similar storage on your device. Where Ezoic’s consent notice appears, it lists those partners and lets you choose them one by one. Ads chosen for you are shown only if you agree. No ad is placed over the puzzle, and no ad opens a new window. There are no social media tracking pixels. One more thing is embedded from outside: when you set up a table for two, a Cloudflare Turnstile check runs to keep bots out. It can store something in your browser for that check, it is not advertising, and it does not follow you between sites.

Clearing it

You are always in control. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes everything we have stored on your device, including any saved puzzle.
